1.1 Name two ways toddlers develop their musical skills according to
researchers.

• Through imitation and memorising rhythms and tones of songs, such as clapping to a
beat and singing in tune (Learning Unit 2, Section 2.2, p. 11).
1.2 Evaluation of music
Development of Literacy
Music can enhance literacy by strengthening listening skills, phonemic awareness, and
vocabulary development. Singing songs exposes learners to rhyme, rhythm, and
sentence structure, similar to how language skills are developed (Learning Unit 2,
Section 2.2.2, p. 12). For example, when learners sing a greeting song such as “Hello
everyone and how are you?”, they practise correct pronunciation and sentence
construction while associating words with meaning. Rhythm and repetition in songs also
support reading fluency and comprehension. In my observation, learners who engaged
in regular music activities recalled new vocabulary more effectively and applied it during
storytelling activities.
,Development of Numeracy
Music supports numeracy through rhythm, beat, and pattern recognition, which are
foundational mathematical skills (Learning Unit 2, Section 2.2, p. 11). Counting beats in
a song or clapping to a set rhythm teaches one-to-one correspondence and
sequencing. For example, learners can clap four beats, pause, and repeat, reinforcing
the number four and equal intervals of time. Musical activities that involve counting or
repeating patterns can also promote early addition, skip-counting, and pattern
recognition. In my teaching practice, learners improved in identifying numerical patterns
after engaging in clapping and movement games linked to music.
ACTIVITY 2: Design a Music Lesson
Design a complete music lesson plan for Grade R learners that includes
presenting and teaching a new song. Your plan should include:
