QUESTION 1 (20 Marks)
1.1. Formulate a suitable title for the proposed study. (3 marks)
An Interpretivist Exploration of Suboptimal Equilibria: Entrepreneurial Influence
and Critical Factors for Venture Sustainability
1.2. Specify the aim and significance of the proposed study. (4 marks)
The aim of a research study is a succinct statement describing the intended outcomes
or objectives. For this interpretivist and exploratory research, the central aim is to:
Explore and understand the emergence of suboptimal equilibria within entrepreneurial
contexts; to investigate how entrepreneurs apply personal characteristics to influence
these equilibria; and to identify critical factors contributing to the sustainability and
outcomes of entrepreneurial ventures.

This aim is compatible with the study’s focus on uncovering deep, context-specific
insights through qualitative inquiry (Creswell & Poth, 2018).
Significance of the Study
The significance of this study lies in its potential to make both practical and
theoretical contributions to the fields of entrepreneurship and business
sustainability.
Practical Significance: The study will provide actionable insights into the dynamics
of entrepreneurial problem-solving, particularly how entrepreneurs navigate
challenging states known as suboptimal equilibria. Entrepreneurs and business
support agencies can use these findings to better anticipate venture sustainability
challenges and to build resilience mechanisms (Neck et al., 2018).
Theoretical Contribution: From a scholarly perspective, the study aims to enrich
existing theoretical frameworks by introducing nuanced understandings of how
personal entrepreneurial traits intersect with complex business dynamics. It
contributes to emerging discussions on entrepreneurial cognition, critical incident
response, and adaptive behavior under uncertainty (Shepherd, 2003).
1.3. Formulate THREE (3) research questions that the proposed study will attempt to
answer. (3 marks)
The study is guided by the following interpretivist, meaning-oriented research
questions:
1. How do suboptimal equilibria emerge and manifest within entrepreneurial
ventures?
This question seeks to understand the origins and expression of problematic or
stagnant business conditions from the perspective of entrepreneurs.
2. To what extent and through what personal characteristics do
entrepreneurs influence the trajectory of these suboptimal equilibria?
This explores the specific traits (e.g., resilience, creativity, leadership) that
entrepreneurs utilize and how these influence the business outcomes.
