PROBLEM ANALYSIS
TARGET GROUP
- Define: Population at risk
- Justify: Why this group? Use literature.
- Describe: Characteristics (age, SES, behavior, etc.)
LEVEL OF PREVENTION
Justify your choice: If you want to apply for Type Focus Requirements (vereisten)
government funding, you have to be clear Primary Prevention Known & changeable cause
that it is a real problem for physical/ mental Secondary Early detection Sensitive test + effective treatment
health of the individual, economically, Tertiary Care Rehabilitation & management
premature death.
SOCIAL ASSESSMENT (what are the social consequences of the health problem?)
- Psychosocial: cf. stigma, isolation, family problems, reduced well-being due to invalidity
- Socio-economic: cf. absenteeism (ziekteverzuim), medical costs (hospitalization, medication)
EPIDEMIOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT (what is the size, severity and distribution of the health problem?)
- Extent (omvang): frequency of incidence, prevalence, mortality
- Severity (ernst): Impact on QoL, disabilities
- Dispersion (spreiding): Who? Where? When?
AIMS & NEEDS ASSESSMENT
HEALTH PROBLEM IN TARGET GROUP (dia 8- 10)
1. Describe problem: why important, consequences QoL, socio-economic & psychosocial;
2. Describe the target group: general situation, QoL; characteristics of target group…;
3. Select level of prevention: & why;
4. Based on literature, identify causes and risk factors (behavior & context): importance & malleability;
5. Identify determinants of behavior: individual characteristics & contextual factors that shape the
problematic behavior;
6. Define performance objectives: behaviors the target group needs to learn, small parts of the behavior.
IM1 NEEDS ASSESSMENT (step 1)
Goal: Assessing the capacity of people/communities to address determinants of health.
- Result: identification & description of:
• Health problem • Causes & risk factors (individual &
• Impact on QoL context characteristics)
• Determinants of these causes
- Ideally: Particpative taskforce (participatieve werkgroep): potential ppn + implementers
Community capacity domains: Shared vision, Sense of community, Participation,
Leadership, Resources, knowledge & skills, Communication & Ongoing learning
PITFALLS
- Lacking justification of choices: avoid making intuitive/ self-evident decisions without explaining.
• : Justify all choices using literature and data (e.g., epidemiological studies)
• : It is acceptable (and often beneficial) to use more than one theory for your intervention.
- Thinking about the intervention too early: Don’t jump ahead to designing the intervention.
• : Follow the step-by-step process of Intervention Mapping & focus first on a analysis of
the problem and target group.
