This document contains Assignment 1 for Unit 4 of the BTEC Level 3 Business course, focusing on managing an event. It explores various formats for collecting a skills audit, including Likert scales, semantic differential scales, observations, questionnaires, and appraisals. The author then applies a semantic differential scale to self-evaluate key event planning skills such as organisation, problem-solving, time management, negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills. The analysis is based on personal reflection and aligns with previously discussed essential competencies for event organisers.

Unit 4 Assignment 1
Managing an event
Daniel Vroy

Common formats for skills audit collection

Likert Scale

A likert scale is a form of survey. It's a type of questionnaire with several
options to pick from, spanning from one extreme to the other, with a
middle or neutral choice usually included. It's also known as a
satisfaction scale since it's great for measuring customer satisfaction
with a product or service. When responding to a Likert question,
respondents must indicate their level of agreement or disagreement for a
sequence of statements on a symmetric agree-disagree scale. (1)

Semantic differential scale

The most reliable approach to gather information on people's emotional
attitudes about a topic of interest is to conduct surveys or questionnaires
that use the semantic differential scale survey feature. A semantic
differential scale is a sort of survey rating scale that is used for
psychological measurement. It is beneficial to have an understanding of
your audience's attitudes, approaches, and viewpoints. (2)

Observation

Another frequent approach to get input is through observation. When an
individual is requested to observe and analyse what an event organiser
is doing in order to assess and draw their own judgments about their
performance, this is known as an observation. Observation is a useful
tool for assessing someone's performance in real time.
One of the observers' responsibilities is to take notes on what the event
organisers are doing well and where they need to improve. The person
being observed may not be aware that they are being observed until
after they have been observed; this is known as mystery shopping, and
once the organiser has been observed, they are provided immediate
feedback.

Questionnaire

In survey research, the questionnaire is the primary tool for gathering
data. It is, in essence, a series of standardised questions, sometimes
referred to as items, that follow a predetermined format in order to collect
individual data on one or more specified themes. As soon as an event
ends, guests are frequently handed surveys asking for comments. This
information can be gathered on paper or online. Paper surveys are less
frequent because they are inconvenient to use and can be costly to
gather and analyse. While online surveys have a lower response rate,
they are simple to complete and inexpensive. (3)

Appraisals

After an event has ended, one approach to evaluate an event planner's
performance is to conduct appraisals. Event organisers may utilise
performance evaluations to see what they've done well, what they need
to work on, and how well they've used their talents. After each event, or
on a more regular basis, such as every six months or yearly, an
appraisal might be conducted. Appraisals are an excellent approach to
assess performance since they may suggest short and medium-term
objectives that event organisers should be aware of in order to enhance
their abilities and performance in the future.
