In "A Letter to God", Lencho, a poor farmer, relies entirely on the rain for his crops. When a hailstorm destroys his harvest, he turns to his strong faith in God for help. Lencho writes a letter to God, asking for 100 pesos to replant his crops. The postmaster, moved by his faith, gathers money from his colleagues but can only send 70 pesos. When Lencho receives the money, he believes the post office staff stole the rest and writes another letter, asking God not to send the money through the post office again. This story explores themes of faith, hope, and human nature, showing both the power of belief and the misunderstanding of good intentions.

Chapter 1: A Letter to God – Summary (First Flight)
Author: Gregorio López y Fuentes

Theme: Faith, hope, and human nature

🔹 Summary in Simple English:
The story is about a poor farmer named Lencho who lives with his family in a small house
on a hill. He depends only on rain to grow his crops.

One day, rain finally comes, but it turns into a hailstorm. The hail destroys all his crops.
Lencho becomes very sad because it was his only hope to feed his family.

But Lencho is a man of strong faith in God. He writes a letter to God, asking for 100 pesos
to replant his crops and support his family. He posts the letter at the village post office.

The postmaster is surprised to see someone writing to God, but he is touched by Lencho’s
faith. He collects some money from his employees and sends it to Lencho, but they are only
able to gather 70 pesos.

Lencho receives the money but becomes angry. He believes God sent the full amount, but
the post office people stole the rest. So he writes another letter to God, asking not to send
the money through the post office next time!

🌟 Moral / Message:
● This story shows unshakable faith in God.

● It also highlights how people can be kind and helpful (like the postmaster).

● But it also shows how people sometimes misunderstand good actions
