100 % Correct Answers | Verified

.Choose a molecule to label, like in the Hershey-Chase experiment, where the
molecule was labeled radioactively in a virus, called a bacteriophage (right), that
infects bacteria and causes them to incorporate its genetic material. /
ANSWER/Protein - are not the genetic material
Nucleic Acids - are the genetic material
Carbohydrates - are not the genetic material
Lipids - are not the genetic material

.Choose the letter of the correct schematic.Top to bottom / ANSWER/S
A
P

.DNA isn't the only nucleic acid used by biological organisms. Organisms also use
a similar nucleic acid, ribonucleic acid or RNA, for several cellular processes.
Shown to the right are schematics of an RNA nucleotide and DNA nucleotide.
What differences do you see? Select all that apply: / ANSWER/the sugar is
different

.Experiment 1: Non-infectious bacteria:
Which kind of bacteria was injected? / ANSWER/Non-infectious bacteria

, .Experiment 2: Infectious bacteria:
Which kind of bacteria was injected? / ANSWER/Infectious bacteria

.Experiment 3: Heat-killed infectious bacteria:
Which kind of bacteria was injected? / ANSWER/Heat-killed infectious bacteria

.If your hypothesis ("proteins" are the genetic material) is accurate, what results
would you expect? / ANSWER/"proteins" will be transferred from the virus to
the bacteria
The bacteria will be changed after the infection

.In the fourth and final experiment Griffith injected a mouse with a mixture of
heat-killed infectious bacteria and non-infectious bacteria. Griffith did not know
what would happen at this point. What do you think?

Drag either the dead or the live mouse over the question mark, then hit next to
find out the actual results of the experiment. / ANSWER/mouse dies

.Nucleic acids aren't just the realm of biological chemistry. Experiments by a
Swiss scientist, Albert Eschenmoser, on nucleic acids in the 20th century yielded
an interesting result: threose nucleic acid, or TNA. TNA is a synthetic (man-
made) nucleic acid that acts just like natural nucleic acids, but resists enzymes
that normally would break down nucleic acids.
Diagrams of TNA and RNA are shown to the right.
What differences do you see? / ANSWER/the sugar is different

.Step 2 / ANSWER/2 connected genetic material
