I. Sensory memory
memory for sensory info that is stored in its sensory form for a few seconds or less
o iconic memory (visual)
o echoic memory (auditory)
ex: saying “what” but then not needing the answer
II. Short-term memory
memory for information that stays in awareness for more than a few seconds but less than
a minute
Demo: right side close eyes, left side close eyes, right side remembers dates, left
remembers string of numbers
A. Memory span
amount of information that can be stored in STM (7±2)
B. Rehearsal vs. chunking
rehearsing – repeating to yourself to remember it
chunking – grouping information together
chunking is generally more effective than rehearsal because each chunk becomes a
single piece of information
