Initial Steps
1. If age 18, 19, or 20, complete a six-hour Adult Driver Education Course through a
Secretary of State certified adult driver education provider.
2. Visit a Secretary of State facility.
3. Provide required documentation.

6. Pay applicable fees.

Knowledge Test Information
The written exam consists of 35 questions, some of which are multiple-choice and
some of which are true/false. 15 questions will address traffic sign identification and the
remaining 20 will be about rules of the road. Applicants must correctly answer 28
questions to receive a passing score.
An applicant directly observed cheating will not be warned but will be failed for that
portion of the exam and prohibited from retaking the written exam for 30 days.
Applicants are allowed three attempts to pass each test within one year of paying the
application fee.
