Bocchiaro 10 questions:
1. Briefly define whistleblowing.
A whistleblower is a person who exposes information that is unethical or illegal to
other people such as managers.
2. Briefly define disobedience.
Disobedience is the refusal to obey rules or orders, usually from someone of
authority.
3. Where did Bocchiaro conduct his study?
The study was conducted in a laboratory at VU university in Amsterdam.
4. What are pilot studies and why is it important to conduct them?
Pilot studies are test runs of the real experiment. They are important to conduct as
the experimenter can observe if the study is ethical. For example if the participants
are emotionally harmed by being overly upset and if they felt deceived. It is also
important to see if the experiment would work.
5. Suggest one advantage and one disadvantage of volunteer samples.
Advantages of volunteer samples include many people being able to apply, being
willing to participate in the study.
However a disadvantage of this is that the participants that volunteer may have an
interest in science, believing that studies are done for a good cause. Therefore they
might do anything that the experimenter asks them to do because ‘it's for a good
cause’. This would lead the experiment to have results not representing a wide group
of people with different mindsets.
6. Draw a bar chart illustrating the results to the questions ‘what would you do?’ and
‘what would the average student at your university do?’
