1. INTRODUCTION (150 words)
In 1994, South Africa’s transition from apartheid to democracy
marked a pivotal moment in the history of its education system.

intentionally designed along racial lines, with different curricula
for white and non-white students. This historical context shaped

2. ACCESS TO EDUCATION (300 words)
Under apartheid, access to education was racially segregated,
and black students faced systemic barriers to receiving education
of the same quality as their white counterparts. The Bantu
Education Act of 1953 institutionalized this separation, ensuring
that black students were limited to inferior schooling. By 1994,
the country’s education system was still dealing with the legacy
of these policies, with vast disparities in the availability of
resources, trained teachers, and educational infrastructure
between racially segregated schools. Access to education in
rural areas was even more limited due to geographic and
economic constraints.
