Unit 8a: Physiology of Human Body Systems

Issue date: 23/02/2022

Deadline: 09/03/2022

Introduction:

In this assignment we have been tasked to research and relay the effects of different
musculoskeletal system conditions and disorders and the effect that the disorders have on the
health and everyday life of the affected individual as well as the possible corrective treatments for
these musculoskeletal disorders.

In my report I would like to focus on the different musculoskeletal conditions that I have and how
that affect me in my everyday life.

I think using myself as an example for musculoskeletal disorders show that they really can happen to
anyone and that they are such an important aspect of our lives which can range from inconvenience
to debilitating.

This assignment will go over things such as the role of the musculoskeletal system in our bodies, as
well as the different diseases, conditions and disorders that can affect our musculoskeletal system
such as arthritis, TMJ and RSI.

No matter who you are, musculoskeletal disorders can affect you and your life forever, so this
assignment is an important topic to me and I appreciate the opportunity given to me to be able to
research these things in more detail as well as relay the knowledge I have gained from this subject as
well as share my own story with the musculoskeletal conditions that I suspect that I have.

What role does the musculoskeletal system play in our bodies?

The musculoskeletal system, which is also called your locomotor system, in your body is everything
from your muscles to your bones, soft tissues, ligaments and tendons. Every single section of the
musculoskeletal system works in tandem to carry the body’s weight and to assist the body to move,
stand sit, run or walk. Aging, injuries and disease may cause stiffness and pain as well as other
problems with your bodies function and movement.

Our musculoskeletal system is subdivided into two broad systems which include our skeletal system
and our muscular system. The skeletal muscles are muscles which use the body’s joints to provide
movement all over our body, while the skeletal system’s main component is the bone. Bones form
joint’s by articulating together and giving our bodies a mobile and tough skeleton. The function of
our joints and bones as well as our skeletal system is supported by our ligaments and cartilage. The
muscular system includes each and every one of the muscles in our body as well as the tendons and
muscle fibres that attach our muscles to our bones. Almost all of the movement in our bodies are
because of muscle contraction in the muscular system.

Besides the primary function of the musculoskeletal system of providing our body with mobility,
weight support and stability, it plays many other important roles such as storing minerals like
calcium and carbohydrates(which is stored in the form of glycogen) as well as the production of
blood plasma and cellular components of blood cells.

, How can the musculoskeletal system be affected by different diseases, conditions and disorders?

Our musculoskeletal system is prone to many different disorders, conditions and diseases. There are
many that are able to affect the way that you interact and communicate with the world including the
way that you move your body or even your ability to speak.

Here is a brief overview of most of the various causes of movement problems and pain within the
musculoskeletal system:

Back problems:

Many people get back pains as they get older from muscle strains and injuries, again due to using
your body for such a long time this is something that generally affects most people but things like
physiotherapy can help reduce muscle strain and back pain.

Aging:

Unfortunately, aging is something that happens to us all and a big part of natural aging is that bones
start losing their density and has the possibility of leading to diseases like fractures and osteoporosis.
Due to using your body for so long cartilages wears away and muscles lose their mass, which leads to
stiffness and pain, which generally decreases your range of motion.

Cancer:

Multiple different types of cancer affect the musculoskeletal system but most prominently is bone
cancer which can disrupt normal bone remodelling which results in destroying the bone and
spreading to nearby tissue or even spreading through the bloodstream.

Birth defects:

Birth defects, also known as congenital abnormalities, are problems with the persons
musculoskeletal system which can affect the person's body structure to the body’s appearance and
function from gestation either through natural growth within the body or due to trauma.

Disease:

Many diseases affect how a person's connective tissues, muscles and bones work, osteogenesis
imperfecta and fibrous dysplasia causes bones to fracture easily and osteonecrosis causes bones to
deteriorate and die.

Obesity:

The increased weight on your musculoskeletal system can cause cartilage damage, deteriorating
bone density and muscle mass, your entire body needs to work harder to support the extra weight
that’s added to your system, this has the possibility of leading to a higher risk of fractures and
physical disabilities as well as a general poorer overall health.

Injuries:

Quite obviously, most injuries affect the musculoskeletal system as that is generally the parts of your
body that are prone to injury, broken bones, sprains, muscle tears and injured tendons and
ligaments as well as other soft tissue injuries resulting from accidents and trauma. but even injury
can come from repetition and overuse, which I’ll get into next.
