LAFD Mission Statement - ANSWERIt is the mission of the Los Angeles Fire

Two major objectives of the LAFD - ANSWERA. Control and extinguish fires, rescue
trapped victims, mitigate the impact of all natural disasters, mitigate hazardous
materials and terrorist incidents, provide basic and advanced medical life support
intervention and transportation to the appropriate medical facility, enforce all laws
relating to the prevention or spread of fires, and remove that which is liable to cause
such fires.
B. Provide public education in disaster preparedness and work with other agencies
in planning for terrorism and disaster mitigation.
This is accomplished through the efforts of the Board of Fire Commissioners, the
Fire Chief, all Bureaus, Divisions, Battalions, Companies, Sections and Units of the
Department.
Fire Chief - ANSWERThe Chief Administrative Officer of the Fire Department. Has
the powers and duties enumerated in Charter Section 522 and is responsible for
administering the Fire Department in accordance with Article V of the City Charter.
RESPONSIBILITY Has the power and duty to:
A. Appoint, discharge, suspend, transfer, or issue instructions to members of the
Department in the line of their duties, subject to the civil service provisions of the
charter.
B. Expend the funds of the Fire Department
, C. Recommend to the Board an Annual Departmental Budget covering the
anticipated revenues and expenditures of the Department.
D. Certify expenditures of the Department to the Chief Accounting Employee.
E. File with the Board at least once a month a written report on the activities of the
Department.
F. Exercise such further powers in the administration of the Fire Department as may
be conferred upon the Fire Chief by the Board.
Chief of Staff - ANSWERThe Assistant Chief.
RESPONSIBILITY: The primary responsibility of this assignment is to serve as an
Executive Assistant to the Fire Chief and includes:
A. Exercising the Fire Chief's delegated authority to direct and coordinate
preparation.
B. Participating on an executive level as a member of the Fire Chief's staff at
command conferences for purposes of determination and evaluation.
C. Developing policies and directives issued by the Administrative Office.
D. Preparing reports and correspondence pertinent to Department operations and
procedures.
E. Coordinating in-depth studies and research to assist the Fire Chief in the planning
and achieving goals.
F. Reviewing and approving of routine reports, forwarding unusual items to the Fire
Chief.
Section Commander - ANSWERThe Battalion Chief assigned as Section
Commander
RESPONSIBILITY: The primary responsibility of this assignment is to supervise and
direct the activities of this Section.
Planning Section Personnel - ANSWEROnly Captains are assigned to this Section.
Responsibilities:
A. Conducting in-depth studies of Department objectives as an aid to the Fire Chief
in this decision making.
B. Reviewing specific problems and providing advance planning studies on areas of
importance to the Department.
