ASSIGNMENT 4
DUE 25 SEPT 2024

,Assignment 4: (Unit 6: Research Methods)

Introduction
Building from Assignment 1, 2 and 3, which explored various aspects that underpin
educational research. In Assignment 4, you are expected to explore and engage with
research methods, which speak to how data is generated, analysed, interpreted and
presented.
Therefore, this document contains information about assignment 4. The assignment
consists of one compulsory question. The total for the assignment is 100.

Structure of Assignment
Therefore, this chapter need to be structured in a specific way and cover key aspects
of what constitutes a research design and methodology chapter. The structure below
is to be used:
Introduction
Research design

QUESTION 1

INVESTIGATING LEARNER OPINIONS ON SCHOOL DISCIPLINE IN SOUTH
AFRICA: A SURVEY RESEARCH APPROACH

Introduction

School discipline is a nuanced and intricate issue that significantly affects the
educational setting and student success in South Africa. Gaining insight into learners'
perspectives on school discipline is essential for developing effective policies that
promote a positive learning environment. This chapter describes the research design
and methodology used in this study, which examines Grade 6 learners' views on
school discipline using a survey research approach. It discusses the selected research
paradigm, methodology, and methods, as well as the sampling techniques, data
organization and analysis, ethical considerations, and measures to ensure the
reliability of the study findings.

The research design functions as a framework for the study, directing data collection,
measurement, and analysis. The study utilizes a cross-sectional survey design, ideal
for capturing the perspectives of Grade 6 learners on school discipline at a specific
moment (Loretta Le Roux 20120 Cross-sectional surveys are particularly useful in
educational research because they allow for gathering data from a large group of
participants simultaneously, providing a comprehensive view of the current state of the
issue under examination. This approach is effective in identifying patterns and trends
within the population, offering insights into learners' perceptions of school discipline.

The decision to use a cross-sectional survey design aligns with the study's aim to
explore and quantify learners' opinions on discipline. This design enables the
collection of data that reflects the attitudes and perceptions of a varied group of
students, allowing for the identification of shared themes and differences within the
sample. Utilizing a survey allows the study to address a wide range of questions
regarding school discipline, such as the perceived fairness of disciplinary measures,
the clarity of school rules, and the consistency in rule enforcement.

, Research Paradigm

The research paradigm guiding this study is positivism, a philosophical stance that
asserts reality is objective and can be observed and measured through empirical
research. Positivism is based on the belief that scientific methods, especially those
involving quantifiable data, are the most dependable means of understanding the
world (Bryman & Bell, 2015). In this study, the positivist paradigm aligns with the use
of structured surveys to gather objective and quantifiable data on learners'
perceptions of school discipline.

Positivism focuses on the importance of observable and measurable phenomena,
enabling researchers to identify relationships between variables through statistical
analysis. By adhering to positivist principles, the study aims to generate reliable and
generalizable findings that can inform school disciplinary policies and practices. The
use of a structured questionnaire and subsequent statistical analysis facilitates the
collection of data that can be generalized to a wider population, ensuring the validity
and reliability of the study's results.

Additionally, positivism advocates for the use of standardized tools, such as the
structured questionnaire employed in this study, to maintain consistency and
accuracy in data collection. This approach reduces researcher bias and enhances
the objectivity of the study, thereby strengthening the credibility of the research
findings.

The research approach adopted in this study is quantitative, emphasizing the
collection and analysis of numerical data to understand patterns, relationships, and
trends in Grade 6 learners' perceptions of school discipline. Quantitative research is
particularly suited for examining measurable aspects of learner opinions, as it allows
for an objective evaluation using structured questionnaires (Creswell, 2014). This
approach facilitates the use of statistical techniques to analyze the data, revealing
common attitudes and behaviors related to school discipline within the target
population.

The quantitative approach in this study aims to provide a clear, data-driven
understanding of learners' views, enabling the identification of trends and correlations
that can inform educational practices and policies. By utilizing numerical data,
various statistical methods can be applied to test hypotheses and draw conclusions
