Chapter 4
1. Define and understand the term Cell
-The cell is the smallest structural & functional unit of an organism.
-Carries out its own life-processes. “CELF Sufficient”
-There are 2 major types of cells: Prokaryotic & Eukaryotic.
- All cells come from other cells; CELL THEORY
- Cell size is determined by physical properties such as surface area/volume ratio
-ALL cells require; 1. A genome (complete set of genes)
2. A division from inside and outside
3. A way to make proteins
4. A medium for chemical rxns. to take place
-Cell membranes are made out of a phospholipid bilayer
2. Describe major differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. As well as their
domains.
Eukaryotic & Prokaryotic:
-Both posses ribosomes
-Plasma membrane (the division from outside & inside)
