QUESTION 2 [50 marks] Use Learning Unit 4- Teaching Listening and Speaking to HL Learners in FET to complete the questions below. Question 2.1 [25 marks] In weeks 15 and 16 of the Grade 11 FET HL class, you are teaching the language skill of listening and speaking. You have decided to ask your learners to listen to the following recording: “The positive and negative impact of social media on students”. Design a plan for this lesson using the guidelines below. TMS3715 Teaching Home Language in FET Assignment 03 The positive and negative impact of social media on students Students are more connected than ever before through social media, especially during these difficult times, when they are physically distanced from their family, friends, and peers. While social media provides many benefits, such as giving students the chance to express themselves creatively, learning opportunities, and the chance to connect with others, social media can also have a negative impact on students, both physically and mentally. It is easy to become addicted, and research shows that students who spend too much time on social media can suffer from poor sleep, eye fatigue, negative body image, depression, anxiety, cyberbullying, and more. The positive impact of social media on students Connect with peers Having a social network, especially during these social distancing times, is incredibly important and has been shown to have a positive effect on mental health and wellbeing. It allows students to connect with likeminded peers, breaking limitations of distance and time. This can be particularly valuable for minority youth, who may have difficulty finding others like themselves. Learning opportunities In addition to the benefits of classroom learning social media provides through sites like YouTube, social media helps students access mental health and well-being information, which can be hard to do offline without stigma. The negative impact of social media on students Poor sleep, eye fatigue, and physical inactivity Social media can be incredibly addictive — we all know what it feels like to tell ourselves we’ll only check our notifications, and before we know it, we’ve been mindlessly scrolling for hours. Using devices can have an especially detrimental effect if done near bedtime, as the blue light emanating from our devices tricks our bodies into thinking it’s still daylight outside, which upsets our natural rhythms. We also blink less when looking at devices, which, in combination with blue light, can lead to eye fatigue and strain. Worsens mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression TMS3715 Teaching Home Language in FET Assignment 03 SCAFFOLDING QUESTIONS YOUR ANSWER 1. Formulate two objectives for this lesson. 2. Describe the language materials and/or media you are going to use for this lesson, and give reasons for your choice. 3. Identify and discuss the theory of language learning which you will use for this lesson, and give reasons for your choice. 4. Briefly discuss the communicative approach and give reasons why this approach will be useful for your listening lesson. 5. Write down the pre-listening activities you will use in this lesson. Facebook has been studying the effect that Instagram has on its younger users and has uncovered some alarming findings. Facebook’s full research slide decks are available through their newsroom. Their research shows that: Source: Most users wished Instagram “had given them better control of what they saw and helped them connect with people who had had a similar experience.” “1 in 3 teen girls blame Instagram for making their body image issues and problematic social media use worse.” Users were more likely to think that “Instagram made problematic use worse, followed by social comparison, body image, FOMO (fear of missing out), sleep issues, SSI, and anxiety.” TMS3715 Teaching Home Language in FET Assignment 03 6. Write down the while-listening activities you will use in this lesson. 7. Write down the post-listening activities you will use in this lesson. 8. Describe how you will conclude this lesson. 9. Discuss the summative assessment strategies you will use to assess your learners. 10. Identify three barriers that may hinder learning in this lesson and explain how you would minimise these. Question 2.2 [15 marks] Use the above text to formulate five questions on different levels of thinking that you would let learners answer after they have listened to the text. You may use Bloom's taxonomy (as discussed in tutorial letter 501 or any other popular theorist such as Barrett). Indicate after each question on which level of thinking the question is. Question 2.3 (10 marks) CAPS (2011:15-17) identifies three types of listening that learners must be prepared for, namely listening for specific information, listening for critical analysis and evaluation and listening for appreciation and interaction. What type of listening would the listening text “The positive and negative impact of social media on students” expect learners to apply? Explain your answer. [TOTAL 100 MARKS]

When teaching Home Language learners in the Further Education and Training (FET)
phase, four basic language skills are emphasized: listening and speaking, reading and
viewing, writing and presenting, and language conventions and structures. Each skill
focuses on different aspects of language acquisition and communication. Here's a

attentively and comprehend spoken language in various contexts, such as lectures,
conversations, and presentations.
- Participating in oral interactions: Learners should develop their speaking skills to
express themselves clearly and fluently in different situations, including formal
presentations, debates, discussions, and informal conversations.
- Effective listening and speaking strategies: Learners should learn techniques for active
listening, note-taking, summarizing, paraphrasing, and asking relevant questions.

2. Reading and Viewing:
- Comprehending different text types: Learners should acquire the ability to understand
and interpret various written texts, including prose, poetry, drama, media articles, and
visual texts like graphs, charts, and images.
- Analyzing and evaluating texts: Learners should develop critical reading skills, such as
identifying main ideas, themes, literary devices, persuasive techniques, and analyzing the
author's purpose and point of view.
- Building vocabulary and understanding figurative language: Learners should expand
their vocabulary, recognize different word meanings, and comprehend figurative language,
such as metaphors, similes, and idiomatic expressions.

3. Writing and Presenting:
- Producing coherent written texts: Learners should learn to write different types of texts,
such as essays, reports, narratives, speeches, and letters, with a clear introduction, body,
and conclusion, utilizing appropriate style, tone, and structure.
- Organizing ideas and arguments: Learners should develop skills in brainstorming,
outlining, and organizing their thoughts effectively, and learn to develop logical arguments
and provide supporting evidence.
- Editing and revising: Learners should acquire knowledge of grammar, punctuation,
spelling, and sentence structure to produce polished written work, and understand the
importance of proofreading and revising for clarity and coherence.
