i. Counter: encounter (the prefix ‘en’ is added to form a verb which was
previously a noun.)
ii. Try: psychiatry (the word ‘psych’ is added along with the prefix ‘-ia’. This
transforms the word from a verb to a noun.)
iii. Train: strain (the prefix ‘-s’ is added to the word which is a synonym for
‘train’
iv. Study: student (the letter ‘y’ is removed and the suffix ‘-ent’ takes it’s place
to form a noun, while ‘study’ was either a verb meaning to mentally
remember anything with the intention of remembering. Or a noun which
refers to an object as a source of information.
v. Save: savior (the letter ‘e’ is removed and the suffix ‘-ior’ is added to
transform the verb ‘save’ into a noun that refers to a person who saves.

1) “I’m going to fill gas in my car.” – The shortened word is gas which is used
in place of gasoline.
2) “Would you please take a look at my mic?” The shortened word is mic
which is used in place of microphone.
3) “I’m your biggest fan!” – The shortened word is fan which is used in place
of fanatic.
