Parkland College Nursing Program Spring 2022 Course: NUR 117 Title: Introduction to Pharmacology – Hybrid Course Credit Hours: 1 semester hour (1 class hour) Course Description: Introduction to basic medication principles. Emphasis on knowledge needed to safely administer medications and the nursing role and responsibilities. Prerequisites: Credit or concurrent enrollment in NUR 113, BIO 121, and ENG 101. Faculty Heidi Papenbrok, MS, RN Course Coordinator Office – L- 249 Office Hours: Tuesday: 0800 – 1000 (In-person, or you may request a Teams meeting) Thursday: 1000 – 1300 (In-person, or you may request a Teams meeting) Or by appointment. Phone: (There will be days I will be out of the office all day, so it is best to email me). I frequently check email throughout the day. Students should address all nursing faculty by title and surname unless otherwise directed. Course Meetings Lecture time (1credit hour): Lectures will occur on Mondays from 12:00 - 12:50 in L111 on days when the College is scheduled to be open. . The unit’s weekly objectives are provided in the course’s “Cobra Learning Management System” under the weekly content section. This course is a hybrid course. Hybrid courses are courses in which a portion of the learning activities has been moved online; time spent in the classroom may be reduced at times designated by the instructor but not eliminated. Such courses combine the best features of in-class teaching with the best online learning features: students experience active, independent learning while seat time is reduced. The content section of the course Cobra page provides specific course content, student learning outcomes, and a weekly assignment schedule. Testing time: Four unit exams, a calculation quiz, a mid-term, and a final exam are scheduled. Unit exams will be taken on-line on scheduled days. The mid-term will be taken during class time in the 8th week of the semester. This course requires the use of Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor for all online exams. Information and instruction for using Respondus is in the Cobra Learning Management System content. No earphones or earbuds are to be worn during online testing. Carnegie Unit Table: The following table represents the expected workload for this course. Times listed for readings and assignments are estimates and will vary from student to student. Course: NUR 117 Approximate time to spend: Lecture: In Class 15 hours/1 hours week Reading Assignments 30 hours/2 hours week Homework 8 hours/ 1/2 hour week Exams/Exam Prep 30 hours/ 2 hours week Total 83 hours Organizing Framework: The nursing process, functional health patterns, and National League for Nursing’s (NLN) eight-core educational competencies are reflected in all aspects of the nursing curriculum. NLN Core Components: Upon completing this course, the student will meet the established competencies at the appropriate level for each of the 4 Core Components set forth by the NLN and adopted by the Parkland College Nursing Program. The Core Components are Human Flourishing, Professional Identity, Nursing Judgement, and the Spirit of Inquiry. Please refer to your Nursing Student Policy Handbook for more information. Functional Health Patterns: The functional health patterns, developed by Gordon, provide a framework for data collection that facilitates health status evaluation and development of nursing diagnosis. There are eleven (11) health patterns; these are reflected in more detail in your Nursing Student Policy Handbook and your nursing course. Nursing Process: The nursing process is the fundamental core of our practice, guiding us to deliver holistic, patient-centered care. The nursing process components include assessment, Work Ethic: The student will meet the established expectations for work ethics performance as adopted by Parkland College. The 10 Characteristics of Work Ethics are as follows: Attendance, Character, Teamwork, Appearance, Attitude, Productivity, Organizational Skills, Communication, Cooperation, and Respect. General Learning Outcomes Critical Thinking and Information Literacy Demonstrate information literacy and their ability to think critically, which includes identifying biases and selecting and evaluating sources from varying as well as conflicting positions. Quantitative Reasoning and Scientific Inquiry Demonstrate their ability to compute and to think and express themselves effectively in quantitative terms. Civic Engagement and Global Awareness Demonstrate their understanding of worldwide political, social, behavioral, environmental and economic issues and ideas, as well as historical, cultural, and geographical perspectives. Demonstrate their awareness and understanding of diversity and its importance in cultures, ideas, perspectives, ethnicity, religion, gender and sexual orientation.
