, The Impact of Nursing Informatics on Patient Outcomes and Patient Care Efficiencies
Nursing informatics integrates nursing science and computer science to record and
analyze patient information and records to improve care. The nurse informaticist (NI) collects,
assesses, and analyzes data to provide input or output that will impact nursing care processes and
workflows. Using nursing informatics in organizations also has a direct impact on the quality of
care and effectiveness. Each organization aims to implement any care technology that will
positively influence care quality and processes. The organization that I am working in for a long
has aimed at implementing a nursing informatics technology that will improve the engagement
of patients, increase access to care and reduce the time that healthcare providers take engaging or
answering the question from the patients. Therefore, developing an inpatient patient portal
project by identifying the stakeholders, impact on patient outcomes or efficiencies, supporting
technologies, and team members' role will help address the deficits in the organization.
The Project
Every organization aims at engaging their patients frequently, whether they are in the
community or the hospital. Engaging the patients by talking to them directly, even in non-urgent
issues, may affect workflow since patients ask many questions. Developing a platform to access
most of their health information and ask questions is essential in increasing their satisfaction and
re-utilization of care services. A patient portal helps patients keep track of their visits,
medications, prescriptions, and test results. It also allows the patients to send emails to the
healthcare provider to address their concerns (MedlinePlus, 2021). Moreover, a patient portal
will enable the patients to organize appointments, ask for referrals, refill prescriptions, update
their insurance information and make payments.
