Assignment C - Part 1
An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
✓ Use the checklist from unit 10 ('Evaluating course book material') to write a general evaluation
of the book.
✓ You won't be able to comment on all items as you only have one unit and the contents, but say
as much as you can.
✓ This must be presented as a coherent essay, not just a list.
✓ Then say whether you personally would like to use the book with an advanced class and why or
why not - this is just your opinion, so there is not a right or a wrong response to this part.
✓ You do not need to refer to the class described for Part 2 of this assignment.
✓ Write 300 - 500 words.

After carefully analysing the coursebook, I have been able to surmise the following conclusions.

The material within the coursebook has been set out in a good academic structure. It moves onto each
topic in a logical manner so not to confuse the reader. The material gradually becomes more difficult,
this is very important as it will build up the learner’s confidence and knowledge.

Throughout the coursebook there are many different activities, which will allow the learner to practice
what they have learnt so far, and to then revisit any areas that they are struggling with. By doing this
it will prevent the learner from moving on to more difficult tasks, until they feel confident that they
can move on.

I could not identify a specific teacher’s book, however, they would find the contents book useful as
it provides you with the subject matter of each unit. Furthermore, it includes key learning points of
“Language focus, Vocabulary, and Skills”.

There are activities within the coursebook that the learners can work on independently. For example,
activity 7, requires the learner to put words in the correct order, another example is activity 8, which
asks the learner to decide if the following points are for, or against globalization.

The coursebook has been designed using images and various colours. It is visually enticing which
will keep the learner engaged. I like the use of bullet points, so it does not overly clutter the workbook.
There is a good balance of the four skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking), Each skill has a
number of activities to help the learner to progress. For example, the listening skill, activity 3a
requires the learner to listen to different pronunciations and to then compare them.

Activities are interesting and varied, some require the learner to work in pairs, groups, and
individually. Having a good mixture of activities should allow the learner to retain more information
as they will be more engaged with the topic. The language used within the workbook is appropriate
for an advanced C1-C2 adult class. I have also used a vocabulary checker to confirm this aspect. The
content of the listening and reading texts are interesting, for example, the main theme of unit 1 is in
relation to “Global Living” which will help with the students with cultural and religious differences.
Page 14 of the workbook focuses on writing a report, this will most certainly be beneficial for those
