WEEK 0: Characteristics of Old Regime Political system generally monarchical Social system is corporate in nature and immutable- no social mobility, not based on “rights”, but rather on “privilege” Economic system= overwhelmingly agricultural, with exceptions Society of Orders/ Estates: Those who prayed (clergy)- 1st estate = small percentage Those who fought (nobility)- 2nd estate Everyone else (peasants and bourgeoisie)- 3rd estate The first estate didn’t pay taxes… they had certain privileges -inequitable, hierarchical system -capital inform of wealth- puts you in a class - in old regime you could never change your group -sumptuary laws- only certain groups can wear a specific type of clothes: Bourgeoisie wore black capes Traditional Authority: Faith and obedience (not individual reason and rights of autonomous individuals) to clergy, king, community, and (fathers)- top down model o Even more true in areas of serfdom- vertical ties o Peasants predominate -From west to east in economy
