NURS 3460 Nervous System (Chapter. 7 - 10) Part 1 Medication Table This table will make you able to “Go with your GUT ASAP!” Group / Class (Prototype) Use Therapeutic Effects Adverse Effects Safety Concerns Administratio n Patient Education Sedative Hypnotic Anxiolytics: Benzodiazepines: - Alprazolam - Diazepam - Lorazepam (IV) Fast relief; short- term therapy GAD, PTSD, seizure, insomnia, alcohol w/d Fast relief; short- term therapy GAD, PTSD, seizure, insomnia, alcohol w/d CNS depression: sedation, ataxia, decreased cognition; observe & report; avoid other depressants Anterograde amnesia: observe & report Oral toxicity: drowsiness, lethargy, confusion; gastric lavage + charcoal/saline cathartic; monitor vitals IV toxicity: resp. dep., hypotension, cardiac/resp. arrest; flumazenil; monitor vitals, maintain airway, provide fluids, resuscitate Enhances GABA effects Avoid for pregnancy and lactation Contraindicated for sleep apnea, resp. dep., glaucoma Caution for older adults, liver disease, hx of substance use disorder Interactions: CNS depressants, anticonvulsants, antihistamines CNS & resp. dep. Grapefruit decr. Metabolism High fat meals reduce absorption Give at bedtime and with food if GI upset Administered IV and orally Oral forms can be used PRN Schedule IV due to physiological dependence Report CNS dep., amnesia, toxicity s/s, paradoxical Short-term use or taper slowly Avoid other CNS depr. including alcohol Avoid grapefruit & high fat meals Do not exceed prescribed dose Do not crush or chew sustained release - - -
