a.Clinical certification: The clinical certification that I will be using is CCRN (neonatal)
b.Target population including setting: The target poulation are NICU
Registered Nurses that work on the NICU unit
2.Discuss why this clinical certification was selected in relationship to the selected
setting.
This certification was chosen in relationship to NICU nursing because of the need for certification in this specialty. Critical Care registered Nurses (neonates) are needed in critical care. NICU Registered Nurses work with neonates at the NICU that have complex medical needs that demand a significant knowledge of nursing services (Rogowski,2015). That is why CCRN (neonates) is a vital certification that should be learned about by the Registered Nurses that work in the NICU unit.
3.Describe the criteria for selected clinical certification
a.Process to obtain clinical certification.
CCRN handbook is a valuable tool that the candidate needs to read in order to succeed. In order to obtain clinical certification “current, unencumbered U.S.1 RN or APRN licensure is required” (CCRN Handbook, 2021). In order to obtain clinical certification, the candidate needs to meet clinical practice requirements hours and lastly pass the certification exam (CCRN handbook, 2021) b.Cost of application and testing
The costs of application fees are divided into member and non memebr costs. For members the Computer- Based Exam costs $245 and for non
members $360. Retest for member costs $170 and for non members
$275. Renewal by Exam for members costs $ 170 and for non members
$275 (CCRN Handbook, 2021). For groups of ten or more applicants that
submit their AACN certification exam applications in the same envelope, computer-based testing savings are available. Employers can save even
more money by purchasing exam vouchers in advance (CCRN Handbook,2021).
c.Requirements prior to certification
Specific requiremnts must be followed with either a 2 year or 5 year option. During the 2-year option the candidate needs to practice as an RN
or APRN in direct care of acutely/critically ill neonatal patients for 1,750 hours, with 875 of those hours collected in the most recent year preceding application (American Association of Critical-Care Nurses,2021). During the 5-year option the candidate needs to practice as a registered nurse or advanced practice registered nurse for at least five years, with a minimum of 2,000 hours in direct care of acutely/critically ill neonatal patients, with 144 of those hours accumulated
in the most recent year preceding application (American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, 2021).
d.Examination description
For taking the certification exam, AACN Certification Corporation offers two computer-based solutions,Live Remote Proctoring and Testing Center (American Association of critical- Care Nurses, 2021). The CCRN
exams are three-hour assessments that include 150 multiple-choice questions. Only 125 of the 150 items are scored, with the remaining 25 being utilized to compile statistical data on item performance for future tests (CCRN Handbook, 2021).
e.Renewal time and process
The CCRN certification is valid for three years. Starting four months before the scheduled CCRN renewal date, the candidate will get renewal
notices via email (CCRN Handbook, 2021).
Even if the candidate does not receive a renewal notice, the candidate
is responsible for renewing the certification (CCRN Handbook, 2021).
