The under-reported crime I am campaigning against is domestic abuse. Women’s
Aid defines domestic abuse as ‘an incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive,
threatening, degrading or violent behaviour, by a partner, ex-partner or family member’.
Domestic abuse can be physcial and sexual assault ; finaicial abuse ; emotional or
psychological abuse, and/or controlling and coercive behaviour. The organisation
ManKind states that for every three victims of domestic abuse, two will be female and
one will be male. Furthermore, the Crime Survey for England and Wales stated that in
the year ending March 2019, there were an estimated 2.4 million adult victims of
domestic abuse - 1.6 million female victims and 786,000 male victims. Due to the high
number of victims of domestic abuse, I feel that it is important for these crimes to be
campaigned against, in order to support victims and reduce the number of future
victims. Additionally, I feel like male victims need to be advocated for. Although the
prevalence for male victims is fewer, I passionately believe they need equal access to
support.
Domestic Abuse may be underreported due to the victim feeling fearful. A victim
may fear reprisals from their abuser if they go to the police, this is especially true in
cases where the victim knows their abuser. The SIU Medicine website states that one in
four men, and one in three women were victims of physical violence by an intimate
partner. This close control the abuser may have will prevent the victim reporting to the
police, as there may be worse consequences than if they remain quiet. For example, they
may fall victim to more severe physical assault or sexual assault. Another reason
domestic abuse may be under-reported is the fear that police will not be able to do
anything to help. This fear can be reflected in the statistic that 39% of male victims and
12% of female victims will not tell anyone about the abuse they are suffering - ManKind.
Only 10% of male victims will tell the police, therefore 90% of these cases are going
unreported. These victims may wish to save themselves the stress and pain of telling the
police and reliving the experience, just for the perpetrator to not suffer any
