Organic foods
Organic: Food that has not been grown or treated with pesticides, fertilisers or
hormones.
Agricultural farming involves growing produce in safe soil and no modifications
can occur to the crops.
Organic livestock must not be given hormones, antibiotics or any animal-by-
products. The livestock must have access to the outdoors and must be given
organic feed.
Does it taste better?
People who grow their own food using no chemicals often say that the food
tastes much better. Some people choose organic food because they believe it
tastes better but each person may have different opinions when tasting food so
there is little proof available. Natural flavours and no additives.
Does it contain less chemicals?
Several studies have found that 25% of organic food carries synthetic pesticide
residues, in comparison to 77% of conventional food
People that have certain allergies to foods, chemicals or preservatives feel that if
they eat only organic foods their symptoms lessen!
Does it look better?
On many conventional farms, the farmers are forced to grow certain varieties of
plants that always look perfect – any that don’t, are rejected by the powerful
supermarkets that buy most farm products.
On many organic farms, the farmer is less concerned with the appearance of the
fruit or vegetable and may grow varieties which are supposed to taste better
Does it cost less
Organic foods may deteriorate faster than conventionally grown products as they
are preservative free – more costly as they do not have a long shelf-life.
Smaller yield produced therefore increased selling price to cover costs of
production.
