1. Do most companies in our country
always comply with regulations or do they
sometimes bend the rules ?

I'm sure most of them do comply with regulations. If they don't, this will be detected by an audit. This will bring a
->
lot of bad publicity for the company and even big fines (= boetes) and imprisonment (= gevangenisstraf) will
follow

2. Do you know of any companies that
donate time, services or money to help
local organizations ?

-> (1) In my village, a local campaign was started last year to support "Vergroot de Hoop". By collecting hedge
pieces of "taxus", they are able to cure cancer patients.
(2) I also read about IKEA. They sell only fair trade products, but they also support local initiatives in Afrika,
Brazil, ... to give education to children by building schools, providing books and other materials,...

3. How can businesses reduce the impact
they have on the environment ?

(1) At my parents' employer BASF, they organize free collective transport for all employees. In that way they
->
reduce the number of cars that drive to work every day. (2) They also promote the bicycle as an alternative by
offering a lease plan.

4. Why should a company act responsible
and deal with any pollution that is a by-
product of its business activity ?

F.ex. use cereals also in dog food : It will bring a lot of bad publicity for the company when they are involved in
-> negative news about their products. When something bad happens, a customer will not make the difference
from which provider it comes from exactly. When negative news is spread, customers will stay away and go to
the competition (= concurrentie).

5. Does your company take an active part
in the life of the local community. If so
what does it do ?

-> I've decided to support the "Student en engagement" actions in our school whenever I can. They support the
local community of homeless people and give them a warm meal with Christmas.

6. Should a company stay true to its
principles and values even if his means a
loss of profit ?

I read about IKEA. They only buy raw materials (= grondstoffen) from local farmers in Afrika, Brazil, .... who are
-> treated fair for their products (= fair trade label) : no child labour or corruption is involved. The farmers also
receive a fair wage. Today, customers find those fair trade labels much more important than a few years ago ...
but there is still a long way to go.

7. What companies in your country share
a strong commitment to protecting the
environment ?
(1) Our government promotes renewable energy like solar panels (= zonnepanelen).
-> (2) Greenpace organizes a lot of campaigns to protect the environment f.ex. clean local parks, clean the ocean,
save animals,...
