Censorship in China

China is a Communist society with very tight restrictions and controls on its own
media agencies as well as the international agencies which operate within its
borders. In 2006 Google offered China a version of its search engine, which had
inbuilt censorship and blocked access to thousands of sites deemed unsuitable by
the Chinese government. Google’s offer was controversial, as some of the restricted
documents included those describing human rights abuses occurring within China.
In 2010 Google made the decision to stop censoring the results from Chinese
searches and all users were redirected to its unrestricted Hong King site. The
decision came after further restrictions on Web activity were put in place by China
and the mail accounts of some Chinese Gmail users came under attack.

1. Why would a country censor the information its citizens can access?

Some countries can be controlling because they want to protect their political side
of the country and to keep the people within the country to be kept in believing
what the government want them to believe from what they are told. But mainly to
control what other citizens see or what they don’t see, so they can get away with
more, or to keep them safe if for example there was a war and there were
thousands or troops dead the government might want to keep the public in the
dark to prevent chaos in the country as that would be another thing to be delt
with.

2. Why do you think Google made the initial decision to cooperate with China in
2006 and then pulled out of the country in 2010?

To provide a better platform for the people in china and its government. They
probably pulled out due to the censorship that China had made on its people and
Google can’t do that anymore.

3. What kind of information would be deemed unsuitable in a country such as
China?

Anything that would consider political or unnecessary or something that can
offend what the country believes in or what they do there. It can also be things
like content that would make the country feel inferior. China also don’t accept any
religion because it could make the leader look or feel inferior.
Also in North Korea it has very poor areas but this is very unknown because the
government have made it illegal to take pictures of the areas or communicate this
to anyone, if this were to happen it is known for people to be executed for this,
which shows how they want to keep this persona or a great wealthy country when
in reality it corrupt.
