1. Aims of the United Nations
The aims (or purposes) of the United Nations are set out in Article 1 of the UN Charter. In
summary, they are:

 To maintain international peace and security, including taking effective collective
measures to prevent and remove threats to the peace and to suppress acts of
aggression.
 To develop friendly relations among nations based on respect for the principle of
equal rights and self-determination of peoples.
 To achieve international cooperation in solving international problems of an
economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character, and in promoting and
encouraging respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms for all.
 To serve as a centre for harmonising the actions of nations in the attainment of
these common ends.

These aims reflect the UN’s foundational goal of preventing conflict while promoting
cooperation and international stability.

The UN charter: a treaty that founded the united nations, it establishes establishes the
purposes and the framework of the organs and how the structure of the united nations look
like.




2. Organs of the United Nations and Their Functions
The UN has six principal organs (Article 7, UN Charter):

(a) General Assembly

 = it is a UN organ composed of all UN member states. It is a deliberate organ . it
procedues resolutions but they are not binding.
 Composed of all UN Member States.
 Functions include discussing and making recommendations on matters within the
scope of the Charter, promoting international cooperation, and approving the UN
budget.
 Its resolutions are generally not legally binding, but they carry significant political
and normative weight.

(b) Security Council

 Wat does it do?
 Has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and
security (Article 24).
 Consists of 15 members: 5 permanent members (China, France, Russia, the UK, and
the US) and 10 non-permanent members.
 Can adopt binding decisions, including sanctions and authorisation of the use of force
under Chapter VII of the Charter.
