Diagnostic Reasoning - Definition • Dynamic thinking process that leads to the identification of a hypothesis that
best explains the clinical evidence.
• A method of exploring a patient problem using an approach that is systematic
and organized, resulting into the generation of a hypothesis.
(remember to take all info from subjective/objective data and put it together it
will impact your thinking)

Diagnostic Reasoning - Purpose • Identify potential underlying cause(s) of the manifested problem (chief
complaint)
• Narrow the hypothesis : eliminate the false
• Develop appropriate treatment or management plan
• Resolve /manage the problem (follow up)
Factors that affect reasoning: Patient driven Patient Driven
• Increasing acuity - acutely worsening
• Poor historians (kids and older adults)
• Altered mental status (might not get the info you need)
• Multisystem disease: acute & chronic (look to see if they're related)
• Multiple complaints (might have to say pick 2 and come back)
