, THE EXPERIENCES OF SOCIAL WORKERS RENDERING SERVICES TO SURVIVORS
OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

1. Introduction and Background

Domestic violence (DV) is a pervasive global public health and human rights crisis, characterised by
a pattern of coercive control and abusive behaviours within intimate relationships, which can be
physical, sexual, psychological, or economic in nature (World Health Organization, 2021). The
profound and lasting impacts on survivors—including trauma, economic instability, and
compromised mental and physical health—necessitate targeted, professional intervention. Social
workers are pivotal frontline professionals in this arena, operating across various settings such as
shelters, hospitals, courts, and community agencies to provide crisis intervention, safety planning,
counselling, advocacy, and system navigation. Their role is inherently complex, situated at the
intersection of personal trauma, systemic barriers (such as inadequate legal protections or housing),
and the demanding ethos of the social work profession which emphasizes empowerment and social
justice (National Association of Social Workers, 2021). The effectiveness of services rendered to
survivors is fundamentally linked to the capacity, resilience, and well-being of the social workers
themselves. Therefore, understanding the nuanced experiences of these professionals is not merely
an exercise in occupational research but a critical component in strengthening the entire ecosystem
of support for survivors of domestic violence. This proposal seeks to delve into these experiences to
inform better practice, policy, and professional support structures.

2. Problem Statement

Despite the critical role social workers play in supporting survivors of domestic violence, there is a
growing recognition that the provision of these services extracts a significant toll on the practitioners
themselves. Research indicates that social workers engaged in trauma-intensive fields like domestic
violence are at heightened risk of experiencing secondary traumatic stress (STS), compassion fatigue,
and burnout due to persistent exposure to clients’ graphic narratives of violence and the high-stakes
nature of ensuring client safety (Bride, 2007). Furthermore, they often navigate systemic challenges
including high caseloads, bureaucratic inefficiencies, limited resources, and, at times, unsafe work
environments, which can be exacerbated by inadequate organisational support and supervision
(Lloyd, King & Chenoweth, 2002).

Concurrently, the evolving landscape of domestic violence work demands cultural humility and
specialised skills to effectively support an increasingly diverse survivor population, adding layers of
complexity to the role. While substantial literature exists on the impacts of domestic violence on
survivors, there is a relative paucity of in-depth, qualitative research focusing specifically on the
lived professional experiences of social workers who serve this population within the South African
context—a setting marked by uniquely high rates of gender-based violence and resource constraints
(Seedat et al., 2009). This gap is problematic because without a comprehensive understanding of the
challenges, coping mechanisms, and support needs of these frontline workers, interventions to
sustain them may be misdirected, ultimately jeopardising the quality and continuity of care for
survivors. This study, therefore, addresses the problem of the underexplored and potentially
compounding professional challenges faced by social workers in the domestic violence sector, which
threaten both their well-being and the efficacy of essential services.
