Fundamentals Patient Care: David Montanari
1. Identify three (3) priority nursing interventions to prevent pulmonary
complications in post-operative patients. Include the desired outcomes of each
priority nursing intervention.
Encourage Use of Incentive Spirometry & Deep Breathing Exercises
Intervention
• Instruct the patient to use the incentive spirometer every 1–2 hours while awake
• Encourage deep breathing and coughing exercises
Desired Outcomes
• Improved lung expansion
• Prevention of atelectasis
• Oxygen saturation remains within normal limits
• Clear or improved breath sounds
Promote Early Ambulation and Frequent Repositioning
Intervention
• Assist patient with early ambulation as tolerated
• Reposition at least every 2 hours if patient is unable to ambulate
Desired Outcomes
• Increased lung ventilation and secretion mobilization
• Reduced risk of pneumonia
• Improved circulation and oxygenation
Maintain Adequate Pain Control to Support Effective Breathing
Intervention
• Administer prescribed analgesics and assess pain regularly
• Use splinting techniques during coughing or movement
