Officials in the Georgia Department of Public Safety found that their computer network
had been attacked by ransomware. There are three agencies under that department:
the Georgia State Patrol, Georgia Capitol Police, and the Department of Motor Vehicle
Safety. The cyberattack caused officials to lose access to the internet and numerous
online services. The Georgia Technology Authority investigated the ransomware attack
after officials decided to shut down the department’s computer servers and systems. By
switching to an old telephone and radio communication system, jobs continued without
interruption.
The U.S. Government should make a greater effort to deter, identify, and respond to
cyber-attacks and be more forthcoming about past cyberattacks and how they have
been handled. To improve cybersecurity, the public and private sectors must work
together. The private sector should build more secure products, which will require the
government to enforce security standards. We should use digital technology only to the
extent that we trust and understand it.
