This paper consists of 13 pages including this cover page as well as a plagiarism
declaration and AI use declaration form at the end of the document.
Instructions:
You are allowed to access your prescribed works and the study material. You are however
not allowed to copy verbatim from your study material. You should write the answers in your
own words and any sources consulted should be cited according to the Harvard referencing
method. You are allowed to use AI for brainstorming, but you may not copy and paste an
essay or sections of an essay that have been produced by AI. In the case of plagiarism or
cheating of any kind you will be reported to the University’s Student Disciplinary Section.
The answered exam script must be uploaded as an MS Word (.doc or .docx) electronic
document.

• Convert all pages into a single Word document.
• Do not load the pages one by one.
• Your answer file must not be more than 100 MB in size.
• Submissions will only be accepted from registered student accounts.
• You are permitted to resubmit your answer script should your initial submission be
unsatisfactory. You have three opportunities for submission. Thereafter, the portal
will be locked.
• Incorrect answer scripts and/or submissions made on unofficial examination
platforms (including email) will not be marked and no opportunity will be granted for
resubmission.
• The mark awarded for an incomplete submission will be the final mark. No

QUESTION 1: POETRY
Read the poem below, and then answer the questions that follow.
Mother Doesn't Want a Dog – by Judith Viorst
Mother doesn't want a dog.
Mother says they smell,
And never sit when you say sit,
Or even when you yell.
And when you come home late at night
And there is ice and snow,
You have to go back out because
The dumb dog has to go.
Mother doesn't want a dog.
Mother says they shed,
And always let the strangers in
And bark at friends instead,
And do disgraceful things on rugs,
And track mud on the floor,
And flop upon your bed at night
And snore their doggy snore.
Mother doesn't want a dog.
She's making a mistake.
Because, more than a dog, I think
She will not want this snake.
1.1) In the poem, the mother gives the child many reasons why she does not want a
dog. List two reasons and explain why they might worry an adult more than a child.
(3 marks)
1.2) Younger learners respond well to humorous poems. Pick three lines or images
from this poem and discuss how they contribute to the humour of the poem.
(6 marks)
1.3) In your study guide, we teach you how to take poetry “off the page” in the
classroom. Provide three suggestions for how would you teach this poem “off the
page”?
