Assignment title
Purpose of this assignment
As a trainee medical laboratory scientist you are required to research on diagnostic techniques involving
blood analysis and how they are used in identifying and following disease. Such information for junior
medical staff can also be used as career guidance.
Scenario
Biomedical Science is one of the fastest growing areas of scientific research, reinforced by the
discoveries of gene mapping. It tries to understand how the body works and especially how to solve
problems of disease and abnormality. Important areas of clinical work and therapy are haematology,
cell pathology and clinical biochemistry. As a biomedical scientist working in hospital or pharmaceutical
environment you will be routinely working in such areas.
In this assignment you will review topics of clinical and medical importance to improve your
understanding of haematology and transfusion science.
Task 1
There are many diagnostic techniques used in blood analysis. Describe at least 2 of these techniques
and in each case explain briefly how the technique is used to identify a specific abnormality.
In your description you must use at least some of the following techniques : Blood smears; red blood cell
count; analysis for iron deficiency; coagulation; platelet counts; tests for abnormal haemoglobin; blood
volumes.
This provides evidence for P4
Task 2
Explain the role of blood products administered by transfusion, in the treatment of disease. You must
explain the treatment of at least 3 of the following diseases:
Haemophilia; anaemia; haemolytic disease of new – born infants; myasthenia gravis; neuromuscular
disease.
This provides evidence for M3
Task 3
(a) By considering the safety of the products used in blood transfusion, discuss in general terms the
screening procedures used.
(b) Evaluate the effectiveness of the screening process in relation to one transmissible disease.
Choose a disease from one of the following :
Hepatitis; malaria; human parvovirus (B19), cytomegalovirus (CMV), chagas diseases.
This provides evidence for D3
Task 4
(a) Explain what cell pathology is.
(b) Describe with at least 3 examples, the use of cell pathology as a diagnostic tool. Use examples
from the following diagnostic tests:
Cell injury; cell ageing; cancer cells in sputum; urine; lesions; fluids in chest and abdomen;
allergic drug reactions.
