, QUESTION 2: ESSAY
Brainstorming / Planning
Topic: Communication barriers and inclusive approaches in a hybrid team
Case: Saim Waqas - employee with hearing difficulties in a hybrid workplace
Main areas of focus:
Challenges: video meetings (cameras off, muffled voices), online chats (fast pace, no
tagging, unclear emojis), office noise, and technical jargon.
Hearing vs listening: hearing = biological detection of sound; listening = active
engagement and interpretation.
Listening barriers:
Physical – background noise disrupting hearing aids.
Psychological – stereotypes and assumptions from colleagues.
Non-verbal communication:
Spoken: body language, eye contact, facial expressions.
Written: emojis, sequencing of chat messages.
Functions of non-verbal cues: guiding conversations e.g., turn-taking, replacing words
with symbols (emoticons).
Strategies: enable captions, keep cameras on, structured chat rules, tag people by
name, avoid jargon, provide inclusivity training.
