This piece of work covers all of the criteria for P6, M3, D2 in Public Services Unit 13: Command and Control in the Uniformed Public Services I have achieved a Merit in this unit by Pearsons Edexcel in 2020. However, I did have a good attempt at the distinction work set and it might be useful to some degree. I achieved a D*D*D* in the second year of public services. I hope this helps!

Shannon W Unit 13: Command and Control in the uniformed public services D2

Task 6 (D2)

Since the beginning of this course back in September 2018, I have had to lead several activities in
order to demonstrate how well I can perform in command and control situations. Overtime, I
personally think that I have slightly improved when commanding a task because I have noticed an
increase in confidence and communication skills compared to the previous year. An example of an
activity from the start of the previous year that I had to lead was the orienteering task we did based
at Sandy Lands, with a local primary school class. This task required them to read a map and go to
the marked positions. They then had to write down what animal was on the sheet located there. My
role was to introduce myself, explain the task and lead the team around, making sure we didn’t lose
any members of our group for the duration of the activity.
For this activity I was partnered with another member of my class to help lead the task together.
However, I found that I stepped back a lot during that task and I was mainly relying on my partner to
do all of the speaking and explaining to the group. Looking back at that day, I lacked a lot of
confidence and communication skills which were required for me to use in order to lead the activity.
Although I did manage to introduce myself and allow everyone else to introduce themselves, I didn’t
communicate with the group as much as I would have liked to.
Where as in comparison to the most recent activity I had to lead, which was the ‘pipe task’ on an
open day at the college, I feel that I lead it more confidently compared to all of the previous tasks.
Even though I was leading with a partner again, I notice that I stepped up more during the task and
took more responsibility. By using good communication skills, I was able to successfully inform the
group about the objective of the task and I was using positivity to encouraging the more introverted
members of the group to join in. To do this I ensured they got several turns of holding the pipe in
order to help their team complete the objective of getting the tennis ball to the other side of the
room. Even though it’s not a significant improvement, I feel that I am able to project my voice a little
bit better than I did before, which makes it easier for everyone else to understand what I am saying
without having to repeat myself because I was too quiet, but it was also an easy group to get their
attention first time. I think this was due to them being surrounded by people they weren’t familiar
with. I was also able to introduce myself so everyone in our group knew who I was and I
communicated well throughout the task guiding them through it, also making any adjustments to
make it more challenging or easier if they were struggling. This required me to use good decision
making capabilities.
Another activity that I had to lead mid-way through my first year on this course which I found to be
quite successful in terms of command and control was, when we went to a local primary school and
as a pair we had to lead several groups of 10 children and do mini games with them. During this
activity, I felt like I was much more involved because I was taking part in some of the mini games and
cheering them on throughout it. Although I still came across as shy, I still managed to use nonverbal
communication skills by successfully demonstrating the task. I know it was successful judging from
the fact that everyone understood what to do when it came around to them giving it a go. I think I
felt more comfortable leading this task because it involved me leading individuals which were much
younger than me and I found it much easier to communicate with them without hesitation. At the
time of this activity I also had some previous experience in leading activities which allowed me to try
and make improvements in order to develop my leadership skills.
In conclusion, I find that I am able to lead a group more effectively when I’m working with a partner
or with the help from my peers because it makes me feel more confident knowing I can get advice
from my partner and I struggle to project my voice loud enough for everyone to hear my
instructions. However, I have found a way to counter this problem is by asking a peer with a louder
voice for help when I want everyone’s attention. I have found that I have grown in confidence since I
