I think that active steps should be taken to correct such immoral earnings Do you remember which option you chose? In this assignment we are going to zoom in on option “a” specifically: “Good for him – he worked hard to earn this”. What this option is basically saying is, that the earnings of billionaires like Musk are completely reasonable and justifiable? What we want you to do in this assignment is to examine this option (i.e. someone, perhaps even you, earning R 12 billion a day for a year) from the perspective of Kant’s formula of universal law version of the categorical imperative. 2. EVALUATE USING KANT'S CATEGORICAL IMPERATIVE (We've done the first two stages for you) State your proposed act as a maxim: "Elon Musk will take R 12 billion (A) every day for a year (C) in order to get really, really rich (E)." Restate this maxim as a universal law: "All people (8.1 billion of them) will take R 12 billion every day for a year in order to get really, really rich." Is the maxim above conceivable in a world ruled by the universal law;

3. Is the maxim above conceivable in a world ruled by the universal law;

According to Kant’s formula of universal law, an action is morally acceptable only if the
maxim behind it can be universalised without contradiction. In this case, the maxim is that
every person could earn R12 billion every day for a year in order to become very rich. If this
were universalised, it would mean that all 8.1 billion people in the world would generate
R12 billion daily. This is not conceivable because such a system would collapse under its
own impossibility. The global economy does not have the resources, infrastructure, or
value to sustain everyone becoming a billionaire daily. Money itself would lose all meaning
and value, as inflation would skyrocket and goods and services could not match such
artificial wealth.

The contradiction lies in the fact that the maxim depends on scarcity and exclusivity of
resources to make sense. If everyone received R12 billion daily, wealth would cease to
have purchasing power, and no one would actually be “rich.” Therefore, the maxim cannot
be universalised without contradiction. Under Kant’s reasoning, the maxim is inconceivable
as a universal law, and thus morally impermissible.
