Bilingual education has become an important topic in educational systems worldwide. First and foremost, it aims to promote proficiency in two languages, typically the mother tongue and a second language, which is often English. In fact, research has shown that bilingual education can significantly enhance cognitive development and academic performance. For instance, students who are taught in their mother tongue during the early years of schooling tend to perform better in both language acquisition and other subjects. This is because they are able to grasp complex concepts more easily when taught in a language they understand well. However, bilingual education is not without its challenges. One major issue is the availability of resources in minority languages. While some countries have made strides in producing textbooks and teaching materials in local languages, many others still lack the infrastructure to support bilingual education effectively. As a result, teachers often have to rely on limited or outdated resources, which can hinder the learning process. Moreover, teachers may not always be adequately trained to teach in both languages, which can affect the quality of instruction. On the other hand, there are several benefits to bilingual education that make it worthwhile. For example, it promotes cultural awareness and appreciation by allowing students to learn about their own language and heritage. Additionally, it fosters better communication skills, as students become more adept at switching between languages in different contexts. Furthermore, bilingualism has been linked to improved problem-solving abilities and enhanced memory skills. Nevertheless, it is important to recognise that bilingual education requires careful planning and implementation. In particular, educators need to be equipped with appropriate teaching strategies and a solid understanding of the challenges involved in teaching multiple languages. Thus, countries that wish to implement bilingual education on a large scale must ensure that both teachers and students have the necessary support. Ultimately, the success of bilingual education depends on a variety of factors, including government policies, teacher training, and the availability of resources. If these factors are addressed effectively, bilingual education can become a powerful tool for improving educational outcomes and promoting linguistic and cultural diversity. (5 Marks) 50 MARKS

 QUESTION 1: LANGUAGE, GRAMMAR, AND DICTIONARY WORK

1.1. Read the sentences below and fix the grammar errors that appear:

Correct the subject-verb errors below:

1.1.1. The boys runs fast through the park every morning.

 The boys run fast through the park every morning.
 The subject "boys" is plural, so the verb should be "run" instead of "runs."

1.1.2. She enjoy playing the netball and the cricket.

 She enjoys playing netball and cricket.
 "She" is singular, so the verb should be "enjoys" instead of "enjoy."

Correct the run-on sentences below:

1.1.3. I wanted to go to the store I needed some groceries but I didn't have time to get there
before it closed.

 I wanted to go to the store. I needed some groceries, but I didn't have time to get there before it
closed.
 This was a run-on sentence because two independent clauses were joined without proper
punctuation. A period was added after the first clause, and "but" was used to connect the
second clause.

1.1.4. The weather was beautiful we decided to have a picnic in the park however we forgot to
bring any food with us.

 The weather was beautiful, so we decided to have a picnic in the park. However, we forgot to
bring any food with us.
 This was also a run-on sentence. A comma and "so" were used to connect the first two clauses,
and "however" was placed at the beginning of the new sentence with a comma after it for
clarity.

Correct the sentence fragments below by making them complete thoughts:

1.1.5. On the way to the mall

 On the way to the mall, I remembered I needed to buy milk.
 Error: This fragment provides detail but lacks a subject and verb to form a complete thought.
It leaves the reader asking what happened on the way to the mall.
 Correction: By adding "I remembered I needed to buy milk", it becomes a complete sentence
that explains what happened.
