Empirical Research- Definition and Components
Empirical research involves systematically collecting and analysing data either
quantitative or qualitative to investigate a research question based on observation or
experience rather than purely theoretical speculation (Neuman, 2000). In legal and
criminal-justice contexts, it broadens traditional document‑based research by
incorporating methods such as surveys, interviews, experiments, or case studies to
generate primary data (Palmer & Crocker, 2007).
