 Question 1: Visual Arts Activity Design

Read the following statement

Many South African schools lack the necessary resources to effectively teach Creative Arts, which
limits learners’ creative development and access to holistic education. However, the CAPS curriculum
emphasises environmental awareness and encourages the use of recycled materials. Teachers can
promote sustainability and creativity by collecting used cereal boxes, tins and cardboard. Placing a
recycling box in the Creative Arts classroom provides learners with accessible materials to transform
into creative products, turning a challenge into an opportunity for innovation.

1. Design a 30-minute Visual Arts activity for Grade 5 learners. Your task is to plan and
describe a creative, engaging and suitable activity for a classroom with limited resources.
Answer all the following sub-questions clearly and in full sentences:

1.1. Describe your Visual Arts activity. Include what learners will do, what they will learn and
how the activity fits into a 30-minute lesson.

What learners will do:
Learners will transform recycled paper or cardboard into three-dimensional "eco-sculptures" by
folding, tearing, cutting, and assembling the materials. They will start by sketching their ideas with a
pencil and then use one coloured crayon to add color and patterns to their sculptures. The process
encourages learners to think creatively about reusing materials and see the potential in everyday
items.

What learners will learn:
Through this activity, learners will enhance their creative thinking and problem-solving skills. They
will explore the concept of transformation, learning how to turn flat materials into three-dimensional
objects. This activity will also promote an understanding of sustainability by using recycled
materials. Learners will engage in creative expression, develop fine motor skills, and practice
teamwork by sharing and discussing their artwork with peers.

How the activity fits into a 30-minute lesson:

 Introduction (5 minutes): The teacher will introduce the activity by explaining how recycled
materials can be turned into art. Learners will be shown a few simple examples, like turning
flat paper into 3D shapes, to spark their imaginations.

 Activity Time (20 minutes): Learners will begin creating their sculptures, using the materials
provided. The teacher will circulate and encourage learners to experiment with different
folding and cutting techniques. Learners will use pencils to add details and patterns, and the
crayon will be used to enhance their work with color and texture.

 Wrap-up/Share (5 minutes): Learners will share their sculptures with the class, discussing the
materials they used and their creative process. This will allow them to appreciate their own and
others' artistic efforts.
