Read the background on nutrition before answering the questions that follow.
One of these basic rights is the child's right to survive, which encompasses the right to life and
the right to health, basic nutrition and health care. This means that each child should have
access to health care through primary health care services to prevent disease and malnutrition.
1.1 A Grade 1 learner's parents report their child often gets sick. Suggest, by providing
specific examples, how they can use the basic food groups to improve their child's
health.
The parents should ensure the child eats a balanced diet from all five basic food
groups.
Carbohydrates (Group 1) – Bread, cereals, rice, pasta
These give energy to help the child stay active and support the immune system. Example: A
bowl of oats or wholegrain bread for breakfast.
Fruits and Vegetables (Group 2) – Citrus fruits, green vegetables, potatoes
Rich in vitamins such as Vitamin C, which helps heal cuts and protects against colds.
For example Oranges, spinach, or green peppers in daily meals.
Dairy (Group 3) – Milk, yoghurt, cheese
Rich in calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones and teeth.
For example a glass of milk or a serving of yoghurt daily.
Proteins (Group 4) – Lean meat, fish, eggs, beans, nuts
, Provide iron, which builds healthy red blood cells to fight illness.
For example Eggs for breakfast or beans in lunch meals.
Fats and Oils (Group 5) – Avocado, coconut (sparingly)
Needed in small amounts for body functions. Avoid unhealthy fats like chips and sweets.
For example a small amount of peanut butter or avocado on bread.
1.2 Distinguish between the roles of the Nutrition Society of South Africa (NSSA) and
the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) in promoting child health. Your
