Literal meaning is straightforward and unambiguous. It provides the specific,
tangible understanding of words as one would find them defined in a dictionary.
For example, if someone says, "The cat is on the mat," the words convey a
clear scenario where a cat is physically situated on a mat. Another instance of
literal meaning can be found in the phrase, "She is wearing a red dress," where
"red" directly denotes the color of the dress, leaving no room for interpretation
beyond the visual fact.



Conversely, figurative meaning emerges when words are used in a way that
deviates from their direct context to convey more complex ideas or emotions,
often requiring cultural or situational familiarity to understand the underlying
message. One example is the metaphor, "Time is a thief." Literally, time cannot
steal; however, figuratively, this phrase suggests that the passage of time often
takes away moments and opportunities, much like a thief would take
possessions. Another instance is the simile, "He fought like a lion." Literally, a
person cannot possess the physical characteristics of a lion. Figuratively,
