1. In a well-structured answer, identify any three cohesive devices and explain
how they contribute
to achieving cohesion of the text. In your response, briefly define each
cohesive device you
intend to discuss and describe how it functions in the text.
Three cohesive devices that contribute to achieving cohesion in a text are
conjunctions, pronouns, and repetition.
1. Conjunctions: Conjunctions are words that connect phrases, clauses, or
sentences, such as "and," "but," and "however." In a text, conjunctions help to link
ideas and show the relationship between different parts of the text. This contributes
to cohesion by making the text flow more smoothly and coherently, allowing the
reader to follow the progression of ideas without interruption.
2. Pronouns: Pronouns are words that replace nouns, such as "he," "she," "it," "they,"
and "we." In a text, pronouns contribute to cohesion by referring back to previously
mentioned nouns and helping to connect ideas. By using pronouns, the writer avoids
repetitive use of the same nouns, creating a more cohesive and concise text.
