Ammonia & Nitrogen.
Importance of nitrogen and its compounds.
78% Nitrogen is present in air. It is inactive. early name was azote which means it
was without life. But later it was discovered that it is inactive, however there are
many uses of nitrogen. Major benefit of nitrogen is the role it plays in plant
protein and animal protein and growth.
NITROGEN CYCLE
HABER PROCESS
Ammonia is produced industrially by Haber process.
The raw materials are nitrogen and hydrogen. Hydrogen is produced by cracking
oil while nitrogen is taken from the air by fractional distillation. The two gases are
combined with a ratio of 3:1(3 hydrogen 1 nitrogen and passed over an iron
catalyst at 450 degree temperature and 200 atmospheres.
Hydrogen + Nitrogen ⇌ ammonia
3H₂ + N₂ ⇌ 2NH3
