BTEC Applied Science - Physics Exam Questions. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of using radio waves instead of light waves to send large amounts of information from the satellite to the surface of the Earth. (4 marks) - ANSWER1. Light waves have a higher frequency than radio waves so light waves would take less time to transfer information. 2. Some of the radio waves reach the Earth's surface so they receive a clear signal. Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of using: • An infrared remote control • A Bluetooth remote control to control the home cinema system. (6 marks) - ANSWER1. Infrared doesn't interfere with other devices - has higher frequency than Bluetooth 2. This means there will be better quality between the devices. 3. Infrared is not able to transmit through most materials. 4. Bluetooth can be used on more than 1 device. 5. Can work through walls. 6. It can interfere with other Bluetooth devices if close by. Describe how a longitudinal wave is produced on a slinky spring. (2 marks) - ANSWERThe slinky is pushed and pulled paralell to the direction of wave Explain why a mobile phone might not receive a signal when in range of a neurotransmitter. (2 marks) - ANSWERBeing below ground level can cause attenuation. Give one reason why a Bluetooth signal does not interfere with a Wi-Fi signal. (1 mark) - ANSWER State 2 useful applications of Bluetooth technology. (2 marks) - ANSWER1. Wireless headphones. 2. Transfer data. Explain one advantage of transmitting light through an optical fibre with cladding (2 marks) - ANSWERCladding increases the critical angle giving fewer reflections. Compare the types of waves formed on strings and formed in pipes when musical notes are produced. (6 marks) - ANSWERSimilarities: 1. Both use oscillations 2. Both have stationery waves. 3. Both produce sound due to resonance. Differences: 1. Waves on a string the string vibrates whereas waves in a pipe the air vibrates. 2. Wave in a string the wave is transverse whereas waves in a pipe the wave is longitudinal. 3. Wave in a string the stationery wave has a node at each end whereas waves in a pipe the stationery wave has a closed pipe with a node at the closed end and an antinode at the open end. Describe how a longitudinal wave travels through air (2 marks) - ANSWERThe waves move and vibrate parallel to the direction of energy transfer. Explain how light revealed back through the endoscope so an image of the lining of the patient's stomach can be seen (4 marks) - ANSWERLight is reflected in the fibre because the ngle of incidence is greater than the critical angle. The fibre has to bend so there are many reflections until the light reaches the top of the fibre.
