, 3.2 AN AFRICAN PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION PG 15:
1. Decolonisation (Education):
- Decolonisation means that we will free the country. All the systems and
organizations, like schools that denied certain people and placed others
first, need to change and those who weren’t privileged now has the
chance to be treated equally. We claim back our uniqueness and our
ethnicity from our African roots.
2. African communalism:
- African communalism is best described as the ways that people in the
past usually operated everything, using only traditional ways. Some
people still have this mindset and won’t change their traditional ways.
African communalism also includes values like rights, human nobleness,
responsibilities etc.
3. Ubuntu (Humanness):
- Ubuntu can be described as a way of life. We need to show humanity
towards others, because we are all part of a unity. We need to show
respect towards others and treat them the way we want to be treated.
Values that are part of this concept are respect, dignity, fairness, love,
acceptance etc. Ubuntu is the foundation in education.
4. Africanisation:
- Africanisation gives us a sense of belonging and it interprets our culture.
There are a lot of place names that have changed to reflect our African
identity. It helps people to understand more about the past and history of
South Africa For example Albert-Bernard Bongo changed to Omar Bongo,
5. Indigenous Knowledge (IKS):
- IKS is a specific system that shows us the uniqueness of a culture. This
knowledge gets build up by certain groups over the years. They also make
sure that they pass this knowledge on from generation to generation.
They also use natural sources for their needs, without actually reducing
these sources.
