Samenvatting plasmatechnologie

Hoofdstuk 1: plasma’s en hun toepassingen1
Inleiding
Natuurlijke plasma’s : interesting to study but cannot be harnessed control is
needed to use them
1) Zon:
mogelijk (HHe)
b. opp: 6000°C
c. corona: 1-3 miljoen °C= plasma samengehouden door magneetveld
v/d zon
i. deeltjes ontsnappen uit de Corona= zonnewind
ii. beïnvloeden magneetvelden van andere planeten bv aarde
iii. plasmavorming in de atmosfeer = Noorderlicht/ zuiderlicht
(aurora borealis of aurora australis
2) ionosfeer= ionisatie gasatomen door zon/ ’s nachts vindt recombinatie
plaats
b. voorbeeld = zon = p-p reactie
c. aarde =D-T reactie= 100-200miljoen graden
voordelen:

raakt
 Langere levensduur = belangrijk voor fusie
o Elektrische stroom: stabiliteit plasma-opsluiting
 Binnen plasmaring= tokomak
 Buiten=stellarator
o Vermogenswinst= vermogen dat vrijkomt/ vermogen ingevoerd
 Break even
 Winst
JETITERDEMOPROTO
2) Gasontladingsplasma’s =lage temperatuursplasma’s
a. Local thermal equilibrium= temperatuur van alle plasmadeeljtes is
hetzelfde
b. Non-local thermal equilibrium= temperatuur is verschillend voor
deeltjes
Toepassingen: materiaaltechnologie, afvalverwerking, lampen,
ruimtevaartonderzoek (zie p9)
Non-LTE: verschillende deeltjes temperaturen in plasma’s (elektronen 1000
graden tov gas 100 graden)
 Corona ontlading
 Plasmanaald
 Magetron
Toepassingen:materiaaltechnologie, lampen, chemische analyse,
lasertechnologie, TV
Exam question: explain LTE AND NON-LTE :

2

, Samenvatting plasmatechnologie

LTE: heavy particles and elektrons all have the same temperature and following
the same energy. In non-LTE plasmas the light particles (electrons) have a much
higher temperature (couple eV) than the heavy particles (room temperature till
1000K)

Hoofdstuk 2: plasma-fysica concepten
Formulas are given if needed at exam
Plasma frequency = maximum frequency of an alternating electric field that
particles experience
The frequency of e- >>> particles only e- feel alternating E-field
Thermal velocity and velocity distribution
Average free path length = average distance plasma particles travel before
collision
electrons need eneough time/ space to accelerate to sustain the plasma
short free path length hard to ignite
 can be tuned by pressure: low pressure less particles so more free space
Collision frequency = how many times particle collide with another particle per
second
Poisons law
= relationship between charge distribution and potential = if there is an
imbalance of charge in the plasma an electric field will be created that will cancel
out this charge separation. Initially the diffusion rate of e->>> positive ions E
ensures that flux will be equal. => ambipolar diffusion= quasi collective
behaviour of electrons and particles move with same diffusion coefficient
Voltage across plate: electrons feel the voltage difference MORE leave the
system more quickly. A charge imbalance is created positive and a negative
region = electric field is created
Slowly equalizing the charges: positive charges will start to move at the same
speed as the electrons
Ambipolar diffusion is the process that makes sure that all the particles have the
same velocity in the end.
