Chapter I
(Vocabulary)

Medium/media
- A medium is a particular material, along with its accompanying technique.
The plural media
Mixed media
- When you combined mediums into one piece of art
Photo montage
- The process of combining parts of various photographs in one photograph
- Conference is an oil painting by Jackson Pollock, from 1952. It is held at the
Buffalo AKG Art Museum, in Buffalo. Number 10, 1952 is a painting by the
artist, created in the aftermath of World War II during the rise of abstract
expressionism
Work of Art
- Is the visual expression of an idea or experience formed with skill, through
the use of a medium
Trained Artist
- Generally learned as apprentice to accomplished masters. Now we have
schools for artist to attend
Outsider Art
- Art produced by those with no formal training, outside the established
channels of art exhibition. Have no knowledge of art history etc.
Folk Art
- Art of people who have had no formal training, but whose works are part of
an established tradition of style and craftsmanship. Such as rugs or pottery
made in traditional ways
- Art that recognizably represents or depicts a particular subject
- Objects that representational art depicts are called subjects

, Abstract Art
- Art that depicts natural objects in simplified or exaggerated ways, which
may not be recognizable at first
Non-Representational Art
- Art without reference to anything outside itself. Also called non-objective

- She was known for her painting New Mexico landscapes, bones, and flowers
Romare Bearden
- Frequently created photo montage works about life in New York
Vincent van Gogh
- Only sold one work during his lifetime, but now his works sell for millions
of dollars
Wassily Kandinsky
- Credited for creating the first non-objective art
Pablo Picasso
- Had a blue period in his art and developed cubism
Salvador Dalí
- Created surrealist works of art from the images he saw in his dreams
Figurative Art
- Representational art in which human form ( rather than natural world) plays
a principle role
Subjects
- Objects that representational art depicts are called subjects
Trompe L’oeil
- Pronounce “tropmp loy” French for “fool the eye”
Form
- Refers to the total effect of combined visual qualities within the work
Content
- Refers to the message or meaning of the work of art
