Multicultural communication in health care refers to the translating of patient education in the healthcare setting. Distinct linguistic and communication patterns are associated with different cultural groups. These patterns reflect core cultural values of society. In the past for various reasons all the cultures in the world tried to remain aloof and never mingled. And as distances shortened, the world changed, the world has become a global village and the interaction of cultures became a necessity. Compare and contrast culture, ethnicity, and acculturation. Culture consists of the totality of socially transmitted knowledge of values, beliefs, norms, and lifeways of a particular group that guides their thoughts and behavior. Culture evolves a way of life by a group of people who deal with the similar issues of survival over a period of time in their environment. Ethnicity refers to a shared identity related to social and cultural heritage such as values, language, geographical space, and racial characteristics. Members of an ethnic group may have the common sense of identity. The process of adapting or blending to and adopting a new culture is acculturation. Acculturation outcomes may result in varying degrees of affiliation within the dominant culture
