SESSION 1: INTRODUCTION
Intro

ERS = ethics, responsibility & sustainability

3 grote domeinen:
• Economic / financial / profit
• Social / society / people
• Environmental / ecological / planet

duurzame praktijken
o Regelreving rond duurzaamheid bv. Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive CSRD,
Environmental Social Governance ESG

è Maar ook nieuwe kansen
è Business kan de wereld positief veranderen

Good pratices:
• Houd rekening met planetary & social boundaries
• Systeemdenken
• Lange-termijn-denken
• Pluralistische kijk op de economie
• Inclusiviteit
• Beleidsinstrumenten voor duurzaamheid

Korte geschiedenis van sustainable development

Al lang geleden waarschuwingssignalen:
- 1798: Malthus
- Meadows: “Limits to Growth” >> grondstoXen zijn eindig, interactie mens-natuur
- …

,!! Brundtland’s definition of sustainable development

(1) Noden / needs
à Basisbehoeften van de armen als prioriteit
à Noden omvatten:
- Fysiologische noden bv. water, slaap, kleding…
- Veiligheidsnoden bv. stabiliteit, vrijheid van angst, voorspelbaarheid…
- Sociale noden bv. aAectie, intimiteit, vriendschap…
- Esteem needs bv. positieve zelfevaluatie, waardigheid…
- Self-actualization needs bv. groei, voldoening, eenheid…

(2) Beperkingen / limitations

o Physical capital / fysiek kapitaal = transport infrastructuur, datanetwerken…
o Human capital / menselijk kapitaal = skills, kennis, mensen…
o Institutional capital / institutioneel kapitaal = democratie, rule of law, bestuur
o Natural capital / natuurlijk kapitaal = grondstoXen, biodiversiteit, atmosfeer…

! Sustainable development = non-declining capital stocks / kapitaalvoorraden

• 3P’s – people, planet, profit
• 5P’s – people, planet, prosperity, partnership, peace
• SDGs – Sustainable Development Goals (UN)
Doughnut Economy, Planetary Boundaries

, 01/10/2025

SESSION 2: Views on sustainability and
their assumptions
Views focus on how economic, environmental & social systems interrelate
à 4 views
1. Disparate view
2. Subsuming view
3. Intertwined view
4. Embedded view
à DiXerent views have diXerent assumptions about:
- Who should benefit
- What is the hierarchy between systems (economy – society – environment)

DISPARATE VIEW

No links between the 3 systems + systems ≠ equal
• Beneficiary: economy
• Hierarchy: non-related systems + economic system as largest

è Companies should not engage in non-economic systems
è Price will regulate the market (invisible hand)
è Business model: profit maximalization should be focus of the business

Implications for sustainability:
• Goal = making profit
• Social / ecological costs seen as externalities / not important
• Only assessment = financial performance
• Attention to sustainability only if government makes it mandatory or if it concerns
personal initiatives (volunteering etc.)

! Criticism:
o Negative consequences for social + environmental systems
o Social + environmental needs are not addressed

Example: Archie Carrol’s Pyramid of Corporate Social Responsibility
1) Economic responsibilities (be profitable)
2) Legal responsibilities (obey the law)
3) Ethical responsibilities (do what is right and fair)
4) Philanthropic responsibilities (contribute to community to improve quality of life)

Real-life cases: mostly organizations of the past because society is asking for change,
most companies are integrating sustainability
