What is a world city and what are they like?
A mega-city is a city with more than ten million people.
A world city is a city that has influence all over the whole world.
World cities are centres for trade and business.
Lots of people and goods from international destinations pass through them.
They also tend to be hubs of culture and science with international media centres.
Push/pull factors in LIDCs/EDCs
Push/pull factors in LIDCs/EDCs
push:
Drought which makes land unproductive and therefore affects subsistence farmers who cannot afford to feed their families.
Lack of opportunities, such as poor job opportunities, mostly in farming. Poor educational opportunities, limited schools/colleges.
pull:
Perception of a better life with more job opportunities and better paid work.
Access to better healthcare and education in the urban areas. Colleges and universities are mostly located in cities.
What are the causes of re-urbanisation (push/pull) and what are the impacts?
What are the causes of re-urbanisation (push/pull) and what are the impacts?
Re-urbanisation is when people move back into urban areas from rural areas or suburbs and it’s happening in some ACs.
Push factors from rural areas/suburbs include: long journeys to work, lack of local facilities/jobs, fewer entertainment opportunities.
Pull factors to urban areas include: higher level facilities such as universities, more highly paid jobs, good entertainment opportunities.
Economic impacts include: economic boost too the city, rural areas go back into decline.
Social impacts: house prices in cities increase, poorer locals priced out of the city centre.
Environmental impacts: brown field sites developed so suburban greenbelts are protected. Fewer people use cars as live closer to work.
